Large Antique Mahogany 7 Drawer Chest Of Drawers/2 Secret Drawers Swansea. This chest of drawers belonged to my husband's grandmother, it's from the Edwardian period. It's made of mahogany, with door knob style handles. The top two drawers are secret drawers, they are slim and can be slid out by opening the drawers beneath and pressing upwards on a wooden lever.
These are useful for keeping private possesions in, such as passports, certificates etc. It has beautiful carving of leaves in a scroll shape at each side.
It's not in bad condition for its age, it has flaws which I will describe as thoroughly as I can. I'm up to my picture limit but I can send further pictures if you would like to see anything that I describe closer up. DRAWERS: The drawers all work fine, there is no bowing or stickiness. There are keyholes but the keys are all missing. There are two replacement handles on one of the big drawers, the newer ones have a stripier grain.
That same drawer also has a shallow chip out of one corner. The wood in the drawers is stained in places. These are made with two panels of wood.
Not bad condition, a couple of shallow scrapes but nothing major. The panels have split apart slightly, to about 7mm. There is a shallow chip out of the beading near the top. TOP: The top is showing some gouges and dings.
There is one large wavy gouge about 50 cm long, up to 3mm wide in some places. There are small patches of varnish loss and little scratches overall. Some gouges and scrapes, but sturdy.Even with the drawers out you will need two strong people to carry it. Height: 116 cm / 46. Width: 122 cm / 48. Depth: 51 cm / 20.
